One of the greatest joys of travelling is discovering the local food, and Cyprus is a true paradise for food lovers. Cypriot cuisine is a delicious blend of Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern influences, focusing on fresh, seasonal ingredients, grilled meats, and shared plates. To experience the real taste of the island, look past the generic tourist menus. Here are seven authentic Cypriot dishes you absolutely must try during your stay in Paphos, along with our recommendations on where to find them.

1Souvla (The Star of the BBQ)

Not to be confused with the smaller Greek souvlaki, Cypriot souvla consists of large, succulent chunks of pork or chicken, slow-cooked on a large rotisserie skewer (a 'foukou') over charcoal. The result is incredibly tender, juicy meat with a smoky flavour. It's the centrepiece of every family celebration.

Where to Try It: Firris Tavern (Konia).

    2Kleftiko

This is a dish steeped in history. Kleftiko is lamb (or sometimes goat) that is slow-cooked for hours in a sealed clay oven with lemon, garlic, and herbs until it is so tender it falls off the bone. The name means 'stolen,' harking back to a time when thieves would steal lambs and cook them in hidden underground ovens.

Where to Try It: Hondros Tavern (Kato Paphos).

    3Sheftalia

You will see these everywhere, and for good reason. Sheftalia are small, incredibly flavourful Cypriot sausages made from minced pork or lamb mixed with parsley and onions, wrapped in caul fat (which melts away during cooking), and grilled to perfection.

Where to Try It: Three Little Pigs Grill House (Tomb of the Kings).

    4Halloumi (The Real Deal)

You may have tried halloumi back home, but you haven't truly experienced it until you've had the authentic, handmade Cypriot version. Often served grilled as an appetiser, it has a firm, squeaky texture and a rich, salty flavour that is second to none.

Where to Try It: Koutourou Ouzeri (Paphos Old Town).

    5Koupepia (Stuffed Vine Leaves)

A staple of any Cypriot meze platter, koupepia are tender vine leaves carefully wrapped around a delicious filling of minced meat, rice, onions, tomatoes, and fresh herbs. They are a true labour of love.

Where to Try It: Agora Tavern (Paphos Old Town).

    6Makaronia Tou Fournou / Pastitsio

The ultimate Cypriot comfort food. Pastitsio is a baked pasta dish with layers of large tubular pasta, a flavourful pork mince filling seasoned with cinnamon, and a thick, rich béchamel sauce on top.

Where to Try It: 7 St Georges (Geroskipou).

    7Loukoumades (Honey Doughnuts)

For dessert, you cannot miss loukoumades. These are small, fluffy doughnuts that are deep-fried until golden and then drenched in honey syrup and often sprinkled with cinnamon and crushed nuts. They are incredibly moreish.
